OCTOBER MOVIE MONTH: The VVitch
Today's movie review is:
So, the only note I wrote down was "music is suuuper creepy and adds to the suspense one thousand percent" (I even wrote out the word "percent" I didn't even use the symbol %--I must have really meant it.) This movie premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in January, was released to the public Feb 2016, received really positive reviews and was actually a box office success! Their budget was a measly $4 million and they grossed $40 million! (Info sourced from Wikipedia)
NOW, my opinion... This movie was actually really good! I must admit the ending kinda fell flat for me, left me kind of feeling like, "that's it? That's where it's ending?" But it wasn't terrible! Left the story kind of open ended (there might even be a sequel to The Witch?) After a quick Google search, it appears there was a second movie in the making but I keep seeing articles about why it wasn't made. You can look into that if you're interested in more information, I'm going to focus on this movie.
This film had a relatively small budget and it really was great! At no point did this feel like a low-budget film, didn't lack anything. The acting was superb, all of the costumes and set pieces were time-period appropriate, they did a great job in ensuring accuracy for the film. This movie wasn't super gory, or, really at all, for that matter. A few gross moments but nothing I couldn't stomach. A few good jump scares and really great music, despite it being super creepy, the music was chilling and added suspense to every scene. Great character development and overall really great story line! This movie, like the previous one I blogged about (you can read it here), got right into the story. There was no long back story, the opening scene sets up the whole movie and explains why they're moving towns right out of the gate.
Quick run through the storyline...
A family is shunned from their town.
They pack everything up and move somewhere in the middle of a forest (of course, all the creepiest shit happens in a fricken forest).
Their youngest son disappears while in the eldest daughters care so they quickly assume she had something to do with his disappearance.
The eldest daughter jokes to her two youngest siblings (the twins) that SHE is the witch.
The family acquires a goat (I honestly don't remember how? I think it wandered onto their property), who they call Black Phillip, and more creepy shit keeps happening.
Apparently, the twins talk to Black Phillip and he told them that the eldest daughter IS a witch.
Her mother turns on her and her father tries to get her to admit she's a witch. She doesn't.
The middle aged boy tries to help his older sister from being sold to another family (with their mother convinced she's a witch, she wants to sell their daughter to another family).
He says there's something in the forest that will help save her, they both go to the forest, get lost, only the eldest daughter comes back.
The family is hunting for their other son (now they've lost 2 children).
Eldest daughter offers to go looking for her brother, she ends up finding him and he's been "witch'd".
The mother blames the daughter some more.
More freaky shit happens.
Their family is torn apart by this curse.
And then the really weird ending.
It's hard to give details without spoiling anything. I think I did a pretty good job.
All-in-all, this movie is really well done! Like I said, aside from the ending... This movie really has all the elements of a good "supernatural horror" film. IMDb gives this movie a 6.7 out of 10 but I think I'd probably round it and give it a 7. It was really good! However, with the end being so "wtf", it doesn't quite push it to an 8. If the ending had been better, the rating would be higher! But 7 is good. I'm holding firm at 7/10. Personal rating.
Have you seen this movie? What did you think? What should I watch next?!
THE VVITCH
I'm pretty sure it's just "The Witch" but the way it's written on the movie poster looks like two V's. Technically a w (double U) is just two....u's anyway, I digress...
Synopsis: "In 1630 New England, panic and despair envelops a farmer, his wife and their children when youngest son Samuel suddenly vanishes. The family blames Thomasin, the oldest daughter who was watching the boy at the time of his disappearance. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, twin siblings Mercy and Jonas suspect Thomasin of witchcraft, testing the clan's faith, loyalty and love to one another."
This movie came out in 2016. IMDb gives this movie 6.7/10. This is a supernatural horror film. Do I need to keep mentioning you can find this on Netflix? I suppose if you haven't read any of my other blogs... So, now you know it is on Netflix for your enjoyment.
Here is the trailer!
