OCTOBER MOVIE MONTH: The Visit
Today's movie was a recommendation from a friend, Hi JT, if you're reading this! We are gonna review...
THE VISIT
Synopsis: "Becca and younger brother Tyler say goodbye to their mother as they board a train and head deep into Pennsylvania farm country to meet their maternal grandparents for the first time. Welcomed by Nana and Pop Pop, all seems well until the siblings start to notice increasingly strange behaviour from the seemingly charming couple. Once the children discover a shocking secret, they begin to wonder if they'll ever make it home."
This movie came out in 2015. IMDb gives this movie a 6.4/10. This is a thriller/horror movie and you can find it on Netflix!
Here is the trailer...
I must admit, I feel like this trailer doesn't do the movie justice. It really doesn't showcase how scary and weird the film really is. The other movies I've reviewed, their trailers gave me goosebumps but this one just doesn't do it for me. The movie itself, on the other hand, was very good! Kept you on the edge of your seat. A few good jump-scare moments. This movie literally had me guessing until the very end. I also feel like this film was an appropriate length! Some scary movies are TOO long and lose the viewer along the way but this one had no extra "fluff", it was right to the point, suspenseful right away and got right into the story. This movie was also directed by M. Night Shyamalan so you already KNOW there's a crazy twist!
I mentioned in my previous review that, that movie had a small budget (of $4M) and grossed over $40M, but when I did research about this movie, I noticed The Visit had a budget of only $5M and grossed over $98.5M!!! I guess what I'm trying to say is, I thought $4/$5 million was small for a budget but the more scary movies I watch, and the more research I do, I'm finding that $4-$5 million budget for a scary movie is normal...
Everything in this movie seems to make sense and the storyline is easy to follow, no complex back story or weird parallel timelines. This movie is NOT gory, I don't think you see blood until one of the final scenes. But even still, it's not gory. Really suspenseful, great acting all around, despite the movie being primarily focused on the kids, it didn't feel kid-y or childish in anyway! The child actors did a really great job. This movie is filmed as a "POV" style, similar to Cloverfield. However, this movie is filmed WAY better than Cloverfield. A lot of people reported having motion sickness from such a shaky cam but that isn't the case in this movie! They did a great job of marrying the idea of the kids filming the visit themselves with it also being cinematically pleasing. Overall great movie! And no motion sickness
Storyline run through...
Mom hasn't seen her parents in a long time and her kids really wanna meet their grandparents (Nana and Pop Pop).
She says they can't go and the kids say they're going anyway so she lets them.
The kids decide they wanna film and document this trip.
They get on a train, arrive at their grandparents and it's all smiles.
Everything is going great until the son sees the grandfather coming from the barn on their property, the boy calls to Pop pop and he doesn't acknowledge the boy.
This piques the boys interest and he decides to investigate on a later day.
Finds weird shit in the barn and asks his Nana about it.
She says not to worry, Pop pop is just old.
Weird shit happens with Nana the next night and the kids ask Pop pop what's wrong with her and he simply says not to worry, Nana is just old.
The grandparents are odd during the day but even more unusual at night.
The kids get warned not to leave their rooms after 9:30pm because... YOU GUESSED IT: weird, freaky shit goes down after this time.
Things keep getting weirder and weirder with each passing day that they're there.
It's the final night with Nana and Pop pop and the kids Skype with their mom and this is where SHIT GETS REAL.
All hell breaks loose.
The kids tell their mom to come get them--quick.
More shit goes down.
The end.
More happens before it ends but I don't want to spoil the ending! With there being such a big twist in this movie, I don't want to give anything away. This was probably the first scary movie that I've watched (this month) that actually had a good ending. Or, rather, and ending that made sense. IMDb only gives this movie a 6.4 out of 10 (I think IMDb has a thing with 6's... All their movie ratings are 6.-something). I want to give this movie a 7/10 but if you've read my previous movie reviews, it looks like I have a thing for 7's... All of the movies I've watched thus far have been equally good! Just very different story lines. Annnd, I've yet to watch a movie that's really wow'd me.
What's your favourite M. Night Shyamalan movie? What should I watch next?
