OCTOBER MOVIE MONTH: The Ritual
Hi mom, hi dad... Yes I'm still writing blogs... I'm trying to make it a "thing."
Anyway...
Happy Octoboo-er!!!..... Okay that didn't work as well as I initially planned... But you get what I was going for... Hi, hello, welcome back!
I am going to attempt to only review scary movies that are on Netflix! So if anyone is interested in watching them, they can check them out!
The movie I will be reviewing today is called...
This movie came out a year ago, October 2017 (released on Netflix Feb 9 2018). IMDb gives this movie a 6.3/10. This a British supernatural/suspense film. You can find this movie on Netflix.
Let's begin with a trailer...
This movie has a really great concept and does a great job introducing the characters and explaining their back story. However, there are lots of holes as this movie progresses. I felt like this movie had all the right "ingredients" to be amazing, but somehow just fell flat? At the beginning, it's very Blair Witch Project-y. The group of guys keeps finding these weird markings and eventually come across a carcass hung in the forest. They all speculate what it could be and end up brushing these weird findings, off. They eventually come across an old abandoned house and decide to stay the night. You guessed it, weird things happened in the house, one guy keeps having flashbacks, nobody understands why, so they leave. Throughout this movie there is the mystery of what is haunting these guys, what is chasing them and what does it want? Later in the movie you get introduced to the monster (personally, this is where everything began falling apart for me). I, personally find, when the monster is finally revealed in a movie, it ruins the suspense for me. In this case, the monster is some weird mishmash of animals, apparently it's some old legend that rules the forest that wants to kill these guys. The movie had a good premise, and good characters and character development, but it feels like lots was left unresolved? It also felt rushed towards the end. Like there could have been room for so much more suspense and excitement, yet it fell flat.
It's like this, three friends go into the wilderness to go camping.
They have an argument, find a shortcut, go off path and get lost.
The weather turns and they all hide out in this creepy abandoned house.
Weird stuff happens to all of them that night, they're shook.
One guy keeps denying weird things, just wants to move on and get on with the trip.
More weird stuff happens and the guys in the group slowly start dying one by one.
The monster is revealed and the story gets fuck-y.
They get kidnapped and meet weird, creepy, forest people that tell him about the monster.
These forest people wanna use these guys as tribute for this monster.
I don't wanna ruin this part of the movie but they start an escape plan.
Now they're running from the monster.
More guys die.
The monster lives.
They get away, the end.
All-in-all, I think a 6.3 rating out of 10 is fair. This movie was ooookkkaaaayyyy. Definitely not the worst I've seen! And it does have great elements and I thought the acting was good! But very mediocre film overall.
Have you seen this film? What did you think? What's your favourite scary movie?
