OCTOBER MOVIE MONTH: Hold The Dark

WOW guess who didn't post yesterday?? THIS GAL. Who knew it was so difficult to squeeze in an hour or more movie each night? I sure as heck underestimated it. Regardless... GLAD YOU'RE HERE! HI, HELLO, WELCOME!

Welcome to the blog that gets raving reviews, such as,
"your blog is actually good" and "I didn't know you could spell so many words correctly."

Thank you for being here. (Read: thank you mom and dad for pretending to read my blogs--and no those quotes aren't from them. One if from my sister, thank you very much.)

I really wanted to say lets boogie but that has no relevance to this blog so... Let's get spooky!

Today's movie is...

HOLD THE DARK

Synopsis: "Summoned to a remote Alaskan village to search for the wolves that killed three children, a wolf expert soon finds himself unravelling a harrowing mystery."

This movie was released last month, September 2018. IMDb gives this movie a 5.7/10. This is a mystery/thriller film. You can find this movie on Netflix!

Here is the trailer...

Okay I'm really nervous about this movie. IMDb gave it a 5.7/10 but the last 5.-something/10 was.... the worst I've seen this far. Will Malevolent hold it's spot at Worst Movie Yet or will Hold the Dark swoop in and steal it? I hope Hold the Dark steals my heart instead. I have high expectations but that's not fair. I'm trying to go in with an open mind! Okay... Here we go...

HERE WE GO, PEOPLE. MUCH ANTICIPATED REVIEW...

Alright so, Malevolent still holds the spot for worst movie this month but this movie was very underwhelming. As I mentioned above, I did have high expectations going into this movie but I tried to go in with an open mind. However, this movie didn't really make much sense? It also was long as hell. It just felt like the storyline was all over the place? This is the type of movie where there is LOTS of symbolism and you really need to pay attention to catch and understand everything. With that being said, I feel like I still need to re-watch this movie to understand, despite paying attention the entire time. It was very hard to follow. I don't want to give away too much of this movie because I know a lot of people were interested in watching it but I feel like the character development and backstories are good, you have an emotional connection to the characters but, their intentions or, motives, rather, shift? Unexpectedly? Almost randomly? Without giving too much away, you see the one character as a hero, serving his country and saving Samaritans but when he gets home, he turns evil? And starts killing police and people in this small Alaskan village? I think he's only evil when he's wearing the mask? I just felt like the events that were happening in this movie made no sense. I couldn't understand what half of the characters were talking about. I don't know if this was done intentionally, to be artsy or symbolic but, I did not understand.

Here's a run through of the movie...

Starts off heavy right away, dives right into the movie and things are intense right off the hop.
Mrs. Slone writes to Mr. Core explaining that her boy had been taken and murdered by wolves and she's seeking his help. (He had studied and hunted wolves previously, he has a book documenting his experiences).
He shows up to help her hunt the wolves.
He goes into the woods and is warned by an Aboriginal woman that he is to "go back the way he came" because "that woman (Mrs. Slone) knows evil."
He ignores this and continues into the woods.
He finds the wolf pack and identifies the one that Mrs. Slone claims killed her son.
Mr. Core sets up his shot, but doesn't shoot the wolf. He spares it, it's life. Something doesn't feel right.
He goes back into the village and Mrs. Slone is nowhere to be found. She is not at her home when Mr. Core returns.
He begins looking for her throughout the house and finds a previously locked door, unlocked.
He goes into the room, hunts around and finds a body hidden in this room.
Now he's on a wild hunt to try and find Mrs. Slone. People report they saw her leaving town.
While Mr. Core is hunting for this runaway woman, her husband, Mr. Slone, returns from the war.
Now he, too, is looking for Mrs. Slone.
The police get involved.
Mr. Slone doesn't want the police involved so he takes matters into his own hands.
Now he's on a rampage looking for his wife.
Weird stuff keeps happening and Mr. Core is trying to warn the village and local authorities.
People keep dying and now the police are after both Mr and Mrs. Slone.
Mr. Core finds Mrs. Slone before her husband does and tries to warn her that he's looking for her.
Not long after Mr. Slone shows up.
Now Mr. and Mrs. Slone are teamed up.
More fucked up shit happens in the Alaskan village.
The end.

Again, I really don't want to spoil this movie for anyone, so it's tough to give a super detailed description but I think you'll get the gist with this.

This movie just seemed like it was all over the place. It was hard keeping track of characters they kept introducing and their relevance. There were several conversations Mr. Core has with the locals that I can't understand the relevance of? Another time, Mr. Core is laying in bed and he is hallucinating and sees Mrs. Core in bed beside him and she says, "there's something wrong with the sky." Mr. Core looks up, sees nothing, and the scene continues. Later in this movie, when he's injured and she's helping him, she says, "now you understand why the sky is bad." I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS??? There is no clarity on this either?? Maybe I'm dumb but I did NOT understand. WHY is the sky bad? WHERE is it bad? WHO is making it bad? Much confusion.

This movie, all in all, was entirely too long and incredibly confusing. IMDb gives this movie a 5.7 out 10 which, I think, is generous. I think I gave Malevolent a 5/10 so I will give this movie 5.5/10. It wasn't a bad movie I just had no idea what the heck was going on. And it was too long. Did I mention this movie was long? It's long.

Have you seen this movie? Did you understand it? PLEASE EXPLAIN, MY GOD.
