OCTOBER MOVIE MONTH: The Babysitter

Wow what a contrast in comparison to the movie I watched yesterday--HA! This one was still almost as gory but the LOL's were definitely rollin' in this movie.

Let's begin!!

THE BABYSITTER

Synopsis: "When Cole stays up past his bedtime, he discovers that his hot baby sitter belongs to a satanic cult that will stop at nothing to keep him quiet."

This movie came out almost exactly a year ago today! Released: October 13th 2017. IMDb gives this movie a 6.3/10. This is a horror/comedy film. You can find this movie on Netflix!

Here's the trailer...

Now, I'm not gonna lie, I saw this movie a few times on Netflix (similar to what I said about Little Evil) and passed it without really giving it a chance. I don't know what possessed me to do it but I watched the trailer for this movie on Netflix and I actually laughed out loud. Now, this meant one of two things. The movie was either going to actually be LOL or they showed all the best/funniest parts in the trailer. You know the movies that make trailers that are basically just Coles Notes* versions of their full length movies? Yeah don't do that. Alright lets get back on track... BASICALLY what I'm trying to say is this movie surprised me! It actually was pretty good!

This movie is kind of Scott Pilgrim-y but this movie is less.... Video game...y? Throughout this movie the kid is trying to "defeat" the people trying to kill him but he doesn't see himself as a character in a video game like Scott Pilgrim does. This is kind of hard to explain I wish I hadn't tried. Just... Keep this in mind should you choose to watch this film, you'll know what I was talking about!

This movie is shot in a really fun way! Like I just described above, it's quite "animated" like Scott Pilgrim. Good, funny fight scenes, good use of blood and gore, it didn't feel like they were adding blood, guts and gore just for the sake of it. It genuinely added to the story or had something to do with the scene. This movie blended horror with comedy really, really well. I, personally, really love movies like this. It kept me on the edge of my seat, had good gore, original storyline, solid plot, good characters and acting, lots of good jump-scares, horror, great comedic timing and jokes, kept things light when they got heavy and, I will never admit it but, I may or may not have totally cried during this movie. But you'll never know. Because I'll never tell.

This movie really plays up the "typical" horror movie characters but not to the point where it's annoying or interfering with the relevance of the story. Cheerleader, jock, black dude, weird/nerdy girl, and the cute, weird, creepy, blonde bombshell girl leading the cult. With that in mind, here's a run through of the movie...

This movie does have a longer back story before it gets into being scary or gory, naturally, it's more of a "family" film (can it even be classified as that?) The back story really helps the audience build a relationship with the characters.

Nerdy kid (Cole) gets picked on at school, has good home life but is tormented everyday of his school life.
Has cool babysitter who we can only assume he's had for years (it appears they know one another very well, they have a good friendship. A bond), she sticks up to the bullies but they won't stop.
The bullying continues.
Cole's parents are going to work on their marriage and go away for the weekend so they call the babysitter.
She comes over, her and Cole have an awesome night and he goes to bed.
A girl at school mentions to him that, once he goes to bed, the babysitter calls her boyfriend and they bang while Cole is sleeping.
He says that's not true and she dares him to stay up past his bedtime to see what really goes on.
So naturally, he does, to prove her wrong.
He stays up that night after the babysitter puts him to bed.
Turns out Cole is right--the babysitter doesn't have her boyfriend come over, she calls a couple of her friends over instead.
Cole catches a glimpse of what's going on and, lo and behold, they're performing a sacrifice.
He then overhears them mention that it was "time to get the blood of the innocent", implying of course, that they were going to kill Cole next.
So he calls 9-1-1 and they advise him to hide and stay out of sight.
So naturally, he decides to fight back and stand in their warpath.
The friends are all trying to help catch Cole.
They all end up dying in horrible and hilarious ways, one by one, as you probably could have predicted, in a movie like this.
Eventually it's just Cole VS the babysitter.
This is his chance to stand up for himself and have no more fear, stop being the nerdy kid and do what's right.
::::STUFF HAPPENS:::::
The end

I really don't wanna spoil this movie for anyone! It actually was worth watching! There were good scares and twists that kept me guessing! Predictable at times, yes, but this movie did have points where I was totally surprised! I know IMDb gives this a movie 6.3 out of 10 but, this is definitely my personal opinion coming into this rating, I think I want to give it a 7 or, even, a 7.5??? Who am I? I mean, I guess any time you read a review you're reading someones subjective opinion.. This movie just had all the right elements, for me! Really funny, gory, scary, thrilling, and suspenseful! A good original spin on a classic concept. Final rating, I'm settling on 7.5/10. I'm doing it. Final answer. Lock it in. Mic drop. That's it.
