D.I.Y ♡ Face Masks

**Before I begin: D.I.Y stands for "Do It Yourself". There. I am saving you from having to google "what does D.I.Y mean?" Whenever I say D.I.Y, more often than not, I get asked, "what does that mean/stand for?" So, I am getting it out of the way! You're welcome.**

Wow I have been terrible at blogging these past number of weeks! Between work, family and the holidays, I really let time escape me! I have not blogged since last year (hehe, that joke is still funny, right??) I am going to get back into the swing of things, I promise! There! You have it in writing! You can even expect a Monday Manicure Minute post on Monday!

I thought a good way to get back into things would be with some D.I.Y face masks! Everyone around this time usually needs a little detoxing and, typically, a break from spending money. I'm usually broke in January so any money saving tips I can find, I use!! A simple money saving tip is making face masks using things you (probably) have in your kitchen! Face masks can get expensive so this is a great way to save some $$$ while also rejuvenating your skin!

In this blog I will tell you about two of my favourite home-remedy face masks!

The first one is two super simple ingredients!

1) Tone Correcting and Hydrating!

Egg whites & honey
  • 1 Egg (egg white only)
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • Optional, 1 teaspoon lemon juice

There is a third optional ingredient you could add and that is lemon juice! Lemon juice contains Alpha Hydroxy acid, which is a common "over the counter" remedy for black heads. The juice penetrates the pores, eliminating oils, dead skin cells and impurities that cause blackheads. Lemon juice also tightens pores! Bonus!

Combine all three ingredients in a bowl and slather the mixture on your face! Crack the egg white into a bowl, add the honey, then the lemon and mix together! Now, I know egg whites aren't the most appealing thing to be rubbing all over your face but they do more than just provide us with a protein-rich breakfast! Along with the lemon juice, egg whites also help to tighten pores and prevent an accumulation of dirt, which causes blackheads and breakouts. By removing exess oil, they're also proven to improve skin tones, especially dryness! Leaving skin with a healthy, desirable glow!

I love honey because there are so many good uses for it! It's a great natural sweetener in tea, smoothies or baked goods (really on anything), it does wonders for your hair (watch for a blog post on hair masks in the future! You bet one will feature honey), but it is also really great for your skin! Honey is beneficial in a face mask as it is a natural antibacterial that helps to sooth and moisturize skin, whilst softening the face for a smooth, flawless finish (unmatched by traditional cosmetics).

Leave this mask on until it begins to tighten, then wash away with water!

2) Invigorate!

Coffee grounds & coconut oil

If you read the two ingredients (above) and said to yourself, "I don't have coconut oil..." GO OUT AND BUY SOME RIGHT NOW. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? WHY HAVEN'T YOU GONE YET? Okay, fine. Read this blog post... THEN go! It's changed my life. You can literally use it for everything and put it ON everything! Use it in your hair, face, body, to eat, for teeth whitening, everything!! Now back to face masks.

For this face mask you will simply need to combine equal parts coffee grounds and coconut oil. I typically don't need more than a tablespoon of each.

  • 1 Tablespoon used coffee grounds
  • 1 Tablespoon coconut oil
Yes you read that correctly! Used coffee grounds. So make yourself a cup of coffee to sip while you do this mask! The coconut oil should be room temperature (some people keep it in the fridge). Take the room temperature coconut oil and mix it until you have a "frosting-like" consistency and then add the coffee grounds. Mix ingredients together to create a delicious paste (delicious consistency... I wouldn't recommend eating it..) Then lightly rub it into your skin using small circles (as it is an exfoliant thanks to the coffee grounds!) and let it sit on your face for 5-10 minutes, then wash away with water!

Caffeic acid found in coffee has anti-inflammatory properties and helps increase collagen production, leaving your skin smooth and healthy. Many beauty companies have begun using coffee and/or caffeine in their beauty products for its brightening and tightening effects. Coconut oil's molecular structure allows for quick absorption of moisture, so this face mask-scrub is safe to use on oily or acne-prone skin because the oil doesn't linger! Super bonus!

Which mask will you be trying? Do you have any tried and true D.I.Y face masks? I'd love to hear from you! xo
