Hair Part One: Dry Shampoo... For You!

It seems with each day that goes by I have less and less free time... There aren't enough hours in the day! With that being said, everyone is always looking for the next easiest thing. The next tool or item that is going to make their lives simpler. Well, one of those things is gloriously gaining popularity..... *drum roll* dry shampoo!! Remember the old 'put baby powder in your hair to extract any excess oil' trick because you didn't have time to shower that morning? This trick still works fabulously, however, I find I smell of baby powder all day which tends to over-power any perfume i'm wearing (or I smell weird because the two scents have mixed together creating a perfume-baby powder hybrid...) OR it leaves my hair looking chalky and white (if you are blonde you wouldn't have had this problem!) So if you find that the baby powder trick works for you, more power to ya!! If you're ready to take your unwashed hair to the next level and step into 2014, then keep reading.....!

Without further ado... Our first product!

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle - Oil Control
(The Organic/All Natural)
Aprx. $18

This particular dry shampoo by Klorane is formulated for oily hair types and is great for those with short hair and/or bangs. It's formula helps keep strands looking fresher longer! Which is exactly what we all want, right?? This product is also great because (as I mentioned above) it has virtually no scent. This, of course, can be a positive and a negative. On the positive side: it doesn't mix with or overpower any perfume I am wearing. The negative: it has no scent. If you're looking for something that is going to keep your hair looking great AND smells amazing see all other dry shampoos listed below! Now, you might be wondering, hey, this all sounds fine and dandy but what the heck does nettle do for one's hair? Well, I'm glad you asked! Nettle works to regulate sebum production, while corn and rice starch take away that greasy, weighed-down feeling. Just spray on roots and allow it to sit for about two minutes before brushing it out. This will allow the ingredients to do their thing and prevent that telltale white-powder residue from forming!

Where to buy: As far as where you can buy this product, I know you can find it at various stores online but being Canadian, I found it at Shoppers Drug Mart: http://www1.shoppersdrugmart.ca/en/Health-And-Pharmacy/Personal-Care/Hair-Care/products/86/673914241007

Batiste Dry Shampoo - Clean & Classic Original
(The Original)
Aprx. $8.57

Batiste Dry Shampoo is, what I like to call, "The Original." It's well-known and well trusted... and for a good reason! Batiste is essentially everything you could want (and more!) in a dry shampoo. It's super volumizing without weighing your hair down, leaves no chalky white residue and actually has a nice fresh scent! If you're not into scents, opt for the original, otherwise I say, go crazy! Batiste has so many delicious smelling flavours... From their newest Cherry scent to the "whisk me away to the beach" Tropical scent (pictured above), they are sure to have a smell to suit everyone. Another perk of this brand: they come in three different sizes, purse/travel size (they refer to it as "handbag" size), regular (pictured above) and an 'extra value' size. You can pretty much find this brand anywhere! Online, drug stores (Canada and US), beauty boutiques... If they sell dry shampoo they sell Batiste.

Where to buy: As I said in the previous paragraph, they pretty much sell this brand everywhere... The two links I have provided are where you can buy it from Shoppers Drug Mart:   http://www1.shoppersdrugmart.ca/en/Health-And-Pharmacy/Personal-Care/Hair-Care/products/86/5010724527481

Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo - Refresh+Care
(The Favourite)
Aprx. $4.77

Dove. Need I say more? Haha... I am a little biased as I completely adore Dove products, however, this one has definitely earned it's stay (in my bathroom). This is your traditional dry shampoo product, keeps your hair looking clean and soft while giving it the extra volume it needs without weighing it down. I find the formula in this particular dry shampoo to be weightless. The product isn't sticky and doesn't leave my hair feeling weighted. This product though, I do feel is more suited towards someone with medium to thick hair, but don't let that stop you from trying it! I also find with this particular brand that my hair feels softer after application. I don't have a lot to say about this product as it is an affordable, standard, everything you could want, dry shampoo!

Where to buy: Again, my local drug store happens to be Shoppers Drug Mart and that is where I found this product, however, you can purchase it from Wal-Mart and almost any local drug store nearest you (whether that be a Shoppers or Rexall or whatnot.) Pantene ProV Dry Shampoo - Original Fresh
Aprx. $4.96

There are three different types of Pantene ProV dry shampoo available in stores. Including the one pictured (above) there is "Blowout Extend" - instant waterless refreshment to extend your blowout and "Root ReBoot" - instant oil antiabortion with zero weight. Of course this makes it easier to find just the right dry shampoo for you. Pantene is a great brand because it always comes out with a few different types of products. Case in point, they came out with three different dry shampoos that all promise to do three different things (depending on what you're looking for). I have yet to personally try this brand of dry shampoo but it is definitely next on my list as I would like to see how it compares to it's Dove counterpart. They're essentially the same price-point so I am hoping the formula's will be similar! I will update you once I try it out! (And if anyone out there has tried it, how does it stack up??)

Where to buy: I'm sure you could find this at your local drug stores and Wal-Mart definitely sells it, unfortunately it is not sold online. Here is a link anyway to the product via Wal-Mart's website: http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/pantene-pro-v-original-fresh-dry-shampoo-140-g/6000176358006

Herbal Essences Dry Shampoo - Color Me Happy
(The Budget Buddy)
Aprx. $2.46

Last but not least of the drug store brand dry shampoos! Herbal Essences of course jumped on board with the whole "dry shampoo" craze! They probably have the best price for a dry shampoo on the market right now (that I can find, anyway). Again, this dry shampoo is pretty basic, pretty standard. I personally don't particularly like the smell of this dry shampoo as it is a little too floral for my liking but for others it could be exactly what you're looking for! I seriously love everything about this dry shampoo except for the scent so please don't let that deter you! Herbal Essences' dry shampoo (and like most of their other products) are very coloured-hair friendly. This particular dry shampoo is called "Color Me Happy - Instant clean & colour protection" so there are extra additives to keep your coloured hair looking shiny and bright all while adding some extra volume and ridding any excess oils! With a price that is less than $3, you really can't go wrong! I would say this is the perfect dry shampoo for anyone with coloured hair or for any dry shampoo virgins.

Where to buy: Wal-Mart:   http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/herbal-essences-colour-me-happy-dry-shampoo-140-g/6000175842579
there is also a "Body Envy" version of this dry shampoo ~ Herbal Essences Body Envy Dry Shampoo (also from Wal-Mart):  http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/herbal-essences-body-envy-dry-shampoo-140-g/6000175842530

Bumble and Bumble (Soft Black) Hair Powder
(The Brand Name)
Aprx. $49.50

~This product also comes in the colours, "soft brown" and "blondish."
Bumble and Bumble is an extremely well-known brand and their products (typically) are amazing! I don't think I have ever had a complaint about anything from Bumble and Bumble....Until now. When I went into Sephora and saw that B&B had a dry shampoo out in different colours I was so excited!!! As mentioned previously, I would always have the problem of white residue (as I typically keep my hair quite dark) but with dry shampoo colours that was no longer going to be an issue! I was tempted to buy both black and brown but with a hefty price tag of $50 I decided I would try out the darker of the two, first. Boy, am I glad I only bought the one. I was extremely disappointed in this product (guess there has to be a first time for everything!) This product left my hair quite sticky even when brushed through, it made my hair VERY difficult to brush, it acts more like a very impressive hair spray than a dry shampoo (so I guess that's a bonus if you're looking for a dry shampoo with super extra hold), and it also leaves black residue on everything. The colour, unfortunately, transfers very easily. I would recommend wearing dark colours on days that you choose to use this dry shampoo and I would also recommend you use it a day that you are going to wear your hair up/not be touching your hair/head at all. I find even if I scratch my scalp my fingers end up black. Also beware when you're spraying it, that there is nothing valuable behind you! Whatever doesn't land on your head will land on your items and leave them speckled black. I would also recommend washing your hair before going to bed if you sprayed the dry shampoo that same day (I would hate for you to ruin your bedding!) The upside of this product is also the downside: coloured dry shampoo.

Where to buy: Sephora, of course: http://www.sephora.com/soft-black-hair-powder-P280527?country_switch=ca&lang=en#BVRRWidgetID

Detox Dry Shampoo Drybar
(Fine-Hair Friendly)
Aprx. $20

This is the simplest dry shampoo to use (as if it should be difficult, am I right?) This one hardly leaves any white residue and when it does, it is extremely easy to brush through, it also doesn't leave my hair sticky or weighted in anyway. I did find though, that this dry shampoo has a very light hold which makes it perfect for anyone with thin or fine hair (sometimes if the product guarantees too much hold it weigh down thinner hair). This one leaves your fine hair looking volumnious without weighing it down or making it look oily. This particular dry shampoo does have a scent so I say, a little goes a long way. I didn't find the scent overpowering ever but I did read reviews where people complained it was very pungent and they were choking on the smell all day... I guess to each their own... All-in-all I would say this is one of my favourite "higher end" dry shampoos (and it's affordable!)

Where to buy: Sephora: http://www.sephora.com/detox-dry-shampoo-P378169?skuId=1506468

I apologize for the shotty photo, this was the only one I could find of the right product! (And of course I threw out mine before taking a photo of it... Tsk tsk tsk...)

Alterna Bamboo Style Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo - Mango Coconut
(Best Smelling)
Aprx. $22

Last but not least!!!! Another higher end dry shampoo product. The first thing I have to say about this product is: translucent. FINALLY!!!!! Why do companies keep making dry shampoo's that come out white or leave white residue? How often is it that someone actually has white hair? Right? So, god bless Alterna for making a translucent spray. Okay, moving forward... I looooove the smell of the mango coconut, it gives my hair just a hint of delcious smell without being overpowering, like my hair took a tropical vacation and there are still remanence of a warmer, beachier time. There is also a 'sheer blossom' scent and personally, that scent smells like cheap perfume (again, though, to each their own...) As far as actual product goes, I really have no complaints! It leaves no white residue in my hair and it really does leave my hair shiny, bouncy and full of volume! The trick I found with this one is if you spray it closer to 6 inches from your hair, you have better results (the product distributes a little more evenly when it's sprayed from further away.) I really have no complaints! Another great product that I would absolutely recommend!

Where to buy: Your local Sephora: http://www.sephora.com/cleanse-extend-translucent-dry-shampoo-in-sheer-blossom-or-mango-coconut-scent-P383175?skuId=1547819 (win award for best scents/smelling)

  1. I love this post. :) I've never tried dry shampoo, but God knows there have been instances where I could have certainly used some! I've always wanted to try it out and this post definitely gives me some ideas about what I can turn to.
